As the official story goes, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower in New York City on the morning of 9/11 killing all passengers on board and causing the collapse of the tower 56 minutes later. American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower shooting debris into Silverstein-owned property, World Trade Center 7.
Silverstein had initially restructured insurance up to $3.5 billion in the event of terrorist attacks on all of his buildings and made it clear in his 99-year leasing agreement that he had the Right to rebuild if terrorists took his towers down.
Immediately after 9/11, Silverstein attempted to claim $12.3 billion from insurance companies naming the attacks on the WTC's as two separate events. In the 11 years since, insurance companies have settled with Silverstein at $4.5 billion, which is 37% of his original claim. Silverstein has filed claims on both American Airlines and United Airlines to date and both claims have been denied.
Silverstein is expected to further pursue a negligence case against United Airlines as his attorneys have argued that both airlines displayed gross negligence in properly screening the hijackers before allowing them to board the flights. The judges in each claim have touted that it was not possible for any airlines to suspect this at the time.
