The conflict between Israel and Gaza has been ongoing since 1948 when Eretz-Israel declared itself the "State of Israel" and the United Nations recognized their sovereignty. Palestinian refugees fled to the Gaza Strip and formed a "foreign extension" of Palestine in the wake of the Arab-Israeli War. Since this time, Egypt and Israel have fought over territory but Israel came out on top. The United States has had very special economic, religious, and securities interests in the welfare of the State of Israel since before its formation.
It has been noted in the most recent developments between Israel and Gaza that the "terrorist" group Hamas has been firing on Israel "just because" and killing innocent Israeli's. What should be noted is that Hamas leader, Ahmen Jabari, was in the middle of forming a peace agreement due to be signed soon by both Gaza and Israel leadership, before he was killed in an Israeli airstrike while traveling through Gaza. This peace treaty would have recognized Gaza (Palestinians) as a sovereign nation by Israel thus giving the United Nations and the United States no other choice but to recognize them as such also. The people of the Gaza Strip feel that this was planned so as to keep the Palestinians from being recognized as a nation.
In response to the airstrike that killed Jabari last week, rockets have been launched from the Gaza Strip into Israel as Hamas sees the airstrike as none other than an act of war and has responded accordingly. Because of the increase in armed conflict, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has threatened that if Gaza "offenses" continue Israel "will take whatever action necessary."
How does it make any sense for Gaza to fire onto Israel first when Hamas leadership is preparing to sign a peace treaty between them and Israel after 60 years of unrest? There are no gains in Gaza attacking first because sovereignty for the Palestinians has been priority and they know that to fire on Israel would have only ruined peace talks. Hamas would have killed Jabari themselves if they saw that he posed a threat to formal peace negotiations.
